Employee Spotlight - July 2008

Karen Jaye
Clerk of Courts, Human Resources

1. What personal health goals did you set for yourself?
I wanted to become healthier, and lessen my chances for developing illness as I get older.  It really was a lifestyle change for me.

2. What prompted you to take action towards achieving your goals?
I saw some health problems within my family, and I did not want to take the same path.

3. What did you do to accomplish these goals?
Joined Weight Watchers with my husband.  Began by slowly changing diet and making it a routine.  We wrote down everything we ate and began to lose weight.  In addition we began to exercise and reward ourselves with things other than food.

4. What factors motivated you to be successful?
Self-motivated.  I had decided I wanted a life change, not a diet.

5. What challenges or barriers did you experience? How did you overcome these barriers?
The challenge is changing your habits.  It's very easy to eat junk food and not exercise when you get home from work.  What helped me was a little bit of competition between me and my husband.  We'd get home and one of us would say we were going walking.  The other would then do the same to "keep up."  Now it's become a habit and I feel better going to the gym or running in the neighborhood rather than sitting in front of the TV.

6. What was your measure of success? Tell us about your success and accomplishments.

Well obviously weight was one of my measures of success.  Also my cholesterol went down almost 80 points.  And the best of all, I now fit into my 15 year old daughter's clothes.  She's not happy about that!

7. How did you reward yourself for reaching your goals?
I made sure to treat myself along the way.  It could be new clothes, because they didn't fit anymore, or a pedicure.  I would also have a "cheat" day.  My cheat might be sweet potato chips, or frozen yogurt.  Something that's not the norm, but won't totally blow my goals.

8. What advice would you give to someone who is trying to achieve his or her own personal health goals?
Don't give up.  If you fall short one day, don't beat yourself up about it, just move on and stick to your goals.  Make yourself a priority.  I have a basket of 100 calorie snacks and fresh fruit on my kitchen table so I won't be tempted to eat something that's unhealthy.
