SEVENTEEN HURRICANE SEMINARS SCHEDULED FOR NEXT THREE MONTHS

FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 7, 2000) – Lee County’s Emergency Management Division – in conjunction with area meteorologists and the American Red Cross – is putting on its annual round of "Hurricane Awareness Seminars" at various locations throughout the county during June, July and August.  Seventeen seminars will be presented between now and August 29, including five at Lee County Library locations.

To find out about a seminar near you, the list of dates and locations is available at the county’s web site, www.lee-county.com, or call the Lee County Emergency Operations Center at 477-3600. The next seminar is scheduled for Thursday (June 8), 7 p.m., at Cape Coral High School.

The seminars arm residents with information about how to protect themselves and their property in the event of a severe storm in our area. Each seminar lasts about two hours and residents are encouraged to attend a seminar so they can prepare for hurricane season.

The Atlantic hurricane "season" runs from June 1 through November 30. The 1999 season spawned four tropical storms and eight hurricanes, two of which – Hurricanes Floyd and Irene – briefly threatened Southwest Florida.
