FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WHO: LEE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION,
through a $20M grant from the Federal Highway Administration, and in
cooperation with the Florida Department of Transportation has opened Express
Lanes.
WHAT: DEDICATED
EXPRESS LANES for LEEWAY PREPAY ACCOUNTHOLDERS ONLY.
WHEN: OPENED SINCE
THURSDAY, AUGUST 3, 2000 AT 6:00 A.M.
August 3rd is also the two-year anniversary of the Variable
Pricing Program, which offers a 50% toll discount before and after peak traffic
times. LeeWay Prepay account holders
using Express Lanes also qualify for the Variable Pricing discount. Variable Pricing times are Monday through
Friday, 6:30-7 a.m., 9-11 a.m., 2-4 p.m. and 6:30-7 p.m. excluding holidays.
WHERE: MIDPOINT
MEMORIAL BRIDGE. The two (2) far left
lanes in both eastbound and westbound directions of the Midpoint Memorial
Bridge will be dedicated Express Lanes.
Coin drop customers will not be allowed in the Express Lanes. Overhead signs will indicate “No Coins/No
Cash” and “Prepaid Only.”
WHY: BECAUSE YOU ASKED FOR IT! Express lanes are able to process many more
vehicles per hour than typical lanes.
This will lead to reduced congestion for all customers and even quicker
trips for LeeWay Prepay accountholders.
HOW: Lee County Department of Transportation is able to implement Express Lanes by adopting Violation Enforcement Policies and Procedures. To insure the safety of the traveling public and our toll personnel, toll violations and a 15 mile-per-hour speed limit will be enforced through the Express Lanes. The new Violation Enforcement System will allow LeeWay Prepay customers the convenience of non-stop cruising through the lanes.
