COUNTY ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR HISPANIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 16, 2001) – The Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board of Lee County is accepting nominations for the 2001 Hispanic Achievement Awards – an honor that recognizes those local citizens who project a positive image of the Hispanic community on a daily basis while overcoming cultural, language, economic, health or other barriers.

Awards are presented in seven categories:

  1. Outstanding Student of the Year (Elementary/Middle School)
  2. Outstanding Student of the Year (High School/College)
  3. Educator of the Year
  4. Outstanding Ministry
  5. Volunteer of the Year/Community Service Award
  6. Employee of the Year
  7. Business Organization of the Year

To nominate, request a form from Silvia Hasak at 652-7912 or print a nomination form off the county’s website www.lee-county.com under "View recent reports, abstracts and memos of interest." Nominations must be received by April 6. The banquet, which is in conjunction with Cinco de Mayo, will be held May 3 at the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall, 10291 McGregor Boulevard in Fort Myers. The cost is $10 per person. To make a reservation, call Silvia Hasak at 652-7912.

The Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board of Lee County was established in 1991 and serves as an advisory group to the Board of Lee County Commissioners. The 12-member board identifies and evaluates problems unique to the Hispanic community, reviews and recommends ways to ensure open communication between the Hispanic community and Lee County Government, and promotes and fosters a better understanding of the problems facing the Hispanic community.
