CALUSA LAND TRUST DONATES $5,000 TO BABCOCK ACQUISITION EFFORT

(Commissioner Bob Janes also donates $10,000 of left over campaign funds)

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 4, 2004) - Two recent donations have added $15,000 to the coffers of the fund created to help in the acquisition of Babcock Ranch.

The Calusa Land Trust donated $5,000 Tuesday to the Babcock Preservation Partnership Fund. And Lee County Commissioner Bob Janes also has donated $10,000 of left over campaign contribution funds from his reelection campaign to the effort.

Members of the board of directors of the Calusa Land Trust - Ed Chapin, Joan Culver, Norm Gowan, Bud House, and Bill Spikowski - presented Janes with the check Tuesday at the commissioner's downtown Fort Myers office (see attached photo).

The purpose of the Calusa Land Trust is to protect the natural diversity and beauty of the Pine Island region by acquiring, managing and preserving in perpetuity environmentally sensitive or historically important land and to foster appreciation for and understanding of the environment and our past. The Land Trust is a broad coalition of individuals, families, and businesses who agree that the acquisition and protection of natural land is important if we are to retain the quality of life that makes the Pine Island region so attractive to people and to wildlife. The Land Trust is supported entirely by people who donate their time, talent, and financial support to protect irreplaceable natural resources.

The Babcock Preservation Partnership was organized in July to help raise fund for the acquisition of the 91,600-acre Babcock Ranch, which straddles Lee and Charlotte counties. Commissioner Janes is the Partnership's president. Babcock Ranch is one of Southwest Florida's most outstanding areas of natural resources and wildlife habitat.

Commissioner Janes also has contributed $10,000 to the partnership from funds raised in his recently uncontested race for reelection. He was automatically elected to another four-year term in July after no one filed to run against him.
