COMMISSIONER JANES APPOINTED TO NACO LEADERSHIP POSITION

FORT MYERS, Fla. (August 4, 2004) - Lee County Commissioner Bob Janes has been appointed chairman of the National Association of Counties' (NACo) Health Steering Committee.

The appointment was announced by NACo's incoming President, Angelo Kyle.

The NACo Health Steering Committee is involved in all matter pertaining to health care delivery and financing including indigent care; health care for the uninsured; Medicaid; Medicare; long-term care; local public health programs; mental health; substance abuse; and developmental disabilities.

Janes also has served on NACo's Medicaid Working Group, Medicaid Indigent Subcommittee and Membership Committee.

NACo is the only national organization representing county governments in the United States. Its goals are to improve county government, act as a liaison with other levels of government, present the county position on national issues and advance public understanding of the role of counties.

NACo's 11 steering committees form the policy-making arm of the association.

Janes also has served as chairman of the Florida Association of Counties' (FAC) Health and Human Services Committee.

Commissioner Janes was elected to the Board of Lee County Commissioners in 2000 and served as chairman in 2002. He represents District 1, which includes Sanibel, Captiva, Pine Island, Boca Grande and portions of Cape Coral.

He has received a number of recognitions for his leadership in Mental Health, Medicaid and Human Services issues including the Community Coordinating Council's 2002 Human Service Award for "Most Outstanding Public Official," 2003 "Advocate of the Year" by the Lee County chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, and a 2003 "Special Recognition Award" from the Ruth Cooper Center for going above and beyond his duties as a county commissioner to support mental health and behavioral care programs in the community.
