Fort Myers, Florida, 9/24/04—Lee County Animal Services, the Humane Society of Lee County, the Collier County Humane Society, and the Lee County Animal Care Trust are teaming up to host the fourth annual Fall Pet Fest! The event will be held October 23, 2004 at Lee County Animal Services, 5600 Banner Drive, Fort Myers, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The shelters are partnering for this event to increase awareness for the need to find homes for Lee County’s orphaned pets and to educate pet owners on proper pet ownership, including the importance of spaying and neutering. In the process, a fun day of activities will be provided.
In 2003 over 30,000 pets ended up in local shelters in Lee, Collier, and Hendry Counties. Due to pet overpopulation, more than 14,000 of these animals were euthanized. Recent hurricanes also have added to the number of displaced pets. It is the agencies’ hope to have every available home filled by a shelter animal. Many wonderful pets in a variety of breeds, colors, and sizes from the shelters and other rescue organizations in the tri-county area will be available for adoption.
In addition, pet owners can bring their own pets out for a day of fun and activities. Local celebrities will judge contests with prizes for the “Best Pet Costume,” “Best Trick,” and “Most Unusual Mutt.” Owners can also enter their dogs in the K-9 Olympic competition! Other highlights include a pet fashion show, fly ball, agility, dog training, and K-9 Unit demonstrations. Expert advice will be available from veterinarians, dog trainers, pet sitters, groomers, and more. Attendees can visit many vendor booths showcasing the latest in pet products and services. Nationally registered Microchip Pet IDs will be available for only $10.00. Rabies vaccinations and county licenses may also be purchased at the event.
