On April 26, 2006 Lee County and the U.S Army Corps of Engineers signed a Project Cooperation Agreement. This agreement allows federal reimbursement for a portion of the project cost. The Assistant Secretary of the Army in Civil Works, John Paul Woodley Jr., authorized the agreement at a signing ceremony on Boca Grande. The event cumulated a 16 year process to re-authorize the federal project, originally approved in 1970. Federal reimbursement could total as high as 4.26 Million, if all easements are obtained. To date, only approximately 65% of the easements have been granted.
