The functions of floodplains

While the areas adjacent to the coast are most at risk, they are also the most popular areas for people to live. That's why government has tried to strike a balance between public needs and private property, regulating the kind of development allowed and where it can be located.

These floodplains - along the coastal barrier islands, on the bay and along the rivers and streams - provide a buffer to accommodate temporary flooding (tidal or storm driven). This buffer, in combination with prudent development, allows for buildings to weather intermittent flooding with a minimum of disruption and cost. These floodplains also offer valuable coastal habitat for plants and animals, and typically are a highly prized recreational resources (providing access to coastal waters) as well.

The County also maintains drainage channels and ditches for storm water management purposes. The County’s Public Works Department maintains them on a regular basis. This natural and developed drainage way system must be kept clear of debris and trash that could hold back the flow of flood waters. State law and County ordinance also prohibits dumping in these waterways. If you see someone illegally dumping trash, furniture, etc., get their license plate number and/or a description of the person, then call and report it to the Lee County Solid Waste Division at (239) 338-3302.
