8-31-10 Healthy Start
Healthy Start of Southwest Florida has a variety of programs to help prevent infant deaths and premature births and to promote health and developmental outcomes for babies including: access to medical care for the uninsured; nurse supervised home visiting services; risk screening to identify families at-risk; and outreach and education to empower families to give their baby a healthy start; and Whereas:In Southwest Florida, more than 17,000 pregnant women and newborns receive Healthy Start Services each year in the four-county area; and Whereas: Research has shown, for every $1 spent on preventing an unhealthy birth, $6 is saved in neonatal intensive care costs, recurrent hospital and medical expenses paid by Medicaid, exceptional and remedial education, child abuse and neglect investigations, disability and dependency costs; and Whereas: Since the inception of the Healthy Start program, the infant mortality rate has dropped 55% in Southwest Florida. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED By the Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida that we hereby proclaim September 23rd, 2010 as: “Infant Mortality Awareness Day” Because Every Baby Deserves a Healthy Start. 8-17-10 Industry Appreciation Award
Industry in Lee County is vital to the community’s health; and
Whereas: Lee County’s existing industries are the key to a prosperous future; and Whereas: The expansion of those industries accounts for the majority of new jobs created; and
Whereas: Lee County’s industries help sustain our quality of life; and Whereas:Public knowledge of the contributions made by industry is essential to maintenance of good community industry relationships. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida does hereby proclaim the week of September 13 through September 17, 2010 as: INDUSTRY APPRECIATION WEEK in Lee County. 8-17-10 Water Pollution Control
Each year the Florida Water & Pollution Control Operators Association recognizes all those who have played a significant part in operating and maintaining drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater systems in Florida by celebrating Florida Water Professionals Week, which applauds their constant efforts to protect our health and environment. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida does hereby extend greetings and best wishes to all observing August 16 - 20, 2010 as: Florida Water Professionals Week in Lee County.

8-10-10 Breastfeeding Awareness Week
Public health officials, health care providers, employers, community organizations, and families worldwide can encourage mothers to breastfeed and seek help if concerned, so mothers feel confident continuing to breastfeed; and
Whereas: The U.S. Surgeon General has set goals to increase the number of women who breastfeed in order to improve the health of their children; and Whereas:World Breastfeeding Week is a time to recognize the importance of breastfeeding around the world with this year’s theme: “Breastfeeding: Just 10 steps! The Baby-Friendly Way”. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida does hereby proclaim the week of August 1-7, 2010 as: BREASTFEEDING AWARENESS WEEK in Lee County.
