3-16-2010 Southwest Florida Reading Festival
The Southwest Florida Reading Festival promotes the Lee County Library System by bringing library programs and demonstrations of electronic resources outside of the library walls and into the heart of Lee County; and Whereas: The Southwest Florida Reading Festival continues to offer free admission; and Whereas: The Southwest Florida Reading Festival is funded entirely by grants, sponsorships, and donations, and without tax funding; and Whereas: The Southwest Florida Reading Festival promotes reading, which helps build a more literate community; and Whereas:Relationships between Lee County Library System and other community organizations are strengthened by working together to plan and implement the Southwest Florida Reading Festival and its partner events; and Whereas: The Southwest Florida Reading Festival has now been celebrating the power of reading for 11 years. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida does hereby proclaim March 20, 2010 as SOUTHWEST FLORIDA READING FESTIVAL DAY

3-9-10 Girl Scouts
Through Girl Scouts, girls grow strong, gain self-confidence, develop leadership skills and learn the lifelong lesson of contributing back to their communities; and, Whereas: Girl Scouting helps girls achieve their potential by increasing awareness of opportunities existent in the fields of math, science, sports, technology and other professional pursuits; and Whereas:The Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Council was formed in 1957 and has capably delivered the optimal Girl Scout experience to young women and adults in 10 counties across southwest Florida; and Whereas: More than 3.8 million Girl Scouts nationwide, including 11,200 girls and 3,400 adult volunteers served through the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida, join in celebrating and rejoicing in this great American tradition.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida that we do hereby designate March as: Girl Scout Anniversary Month and express the appreciation of our citizens to the Southwest Florida Council and the Girl Scouts of the USA for their interest in, and dedication to, America’s youth. 2-23-10 Boston Red Sox Spring Training
Lee County is privileged to be associated with an organization of the Boston Red Sox’s caliber. We recognize and place significant community value on the fact that the Red Sox have helped to raise millions of dollars for Lee County charities through their Foundation; and Whereas: Lee County would like to congratulate the Boston Red Sox on your continued success. Your ongoing excellence has brought the world’s media attention and tens of thousands of fans to Lee County, which in turn generates a significant impact for our tourism industry. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida – along with Lee County’s Parks & Recreation Department, Visitor & Convention Bureau, Sports Authority, Facilities Management Division and the City of Fort Myers – do hereby proclaim its full support for the Boston Red Sox organization and we send our most sincere best wishes for success in the upcoming 2010 baseball season.

Circulation Day is viewed as a giant yard sale where all household items that have been taken out of circulation are once again in circulation and put to good use by citizens in need. 2-23-10 Guardian Ad Litem Month
Voices for Kids and the Guardian ad Litem Program work together towards the goal of representing 100% of children who need a Guardian ad Litem volunteer, and to provide resources to meet children’s special needs, unavailable through any other source in the community; and Whereas: 250 volunteers contribute over 2,500 hours each month to be the voices in court and the advocates within the community for about 600 children in Lee County; and Whereas:There are 150 dependent children in Lee County still in need of a Guardian ad Litem volunteer; and Whereas: Both Voices for Kids and the Guardian ad Litem Program participate locally and statewide in speaking to legislators and community leaders about abused, neglected, and abandoned children’s needs, joining nationally with the Court Appointed Special Advocate Association.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That The Board Of County Commissioners Of Lee County, Florida, that we do hereby proclaim March 2010 as: GUARDIAN AD LITEM MONTH
in Lee County and urge all citizens to recognize and honor Guardian ad Litem and Voices for Kids volunteers supporting local child victims of abuse, neglect and abandonment.

The Center for the Arts production of Sweet Charity will be the only Lee County high school musical to be performed at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, Morsani Hall in April: and
Whereas: To prepare for the large stage performance at Morsani Hall in Tampa and as the main fundraiser, the students will perform Sweet Charity at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall on March 31, 2010, 7:30 PM; and NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida that we do hereby proclaim April 5 – 9, 2010 as: Cypress Lake Center for the Arts Sweet Charity Week in Lee County and urge all citizens to recognize and support the students for their Barbara B. 2-16-10 Michael G. Rippe Parkway
Mike’s creativity in identifying alternative funding sources and his ability to deliver projects were instrumental in bringing $1 billion dollars of transportation improvements to Lee County and Southwest Florida, such as widening of State Road 78, State Road 80, State Road 82, U.S. 41, Business U.S. 41, replacement of the Edison Bridge over the Caloosahatchee River, and the recent completion of the iROX 75 project; and
Whereas: Mike’s professional expertise and personal joy in life were taking transportation projects from concept to completion; and Whereas: Mike’s perseverance and dedication to delivering transportation improvements to Southwest Florida have touched the lives of residents and visitors to this area, making a real difference to people who travel in Lee County; and Whereas: Mike’s charm and enthusiasm persuaded many to follow his lead and demonstrate their love for Lee County through on-going involvement in community projects, causes and events; and
Whereas: Mike’s commitment to the Metro Extension project began with the Project Development and Environmental Study in the early 1990s and continued throughout production to make this job construction ready; and Whereas: Mike’s knowledge, insight, understanding and true dedication brought environmental agencies, transportation partners and residents together to realize the Metro Extension project. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED That The Board Of County Commissioners Of Lee County, Florida, does hereby supports and urges the Florida Legislature to designate the Metro Parkway Extension in Lee County (State Road 739 from Six Mile Cypress Parkway to U.S. 41), as the MICHAEL G. RIPPE PARKWAY, and further demonstrates support by locally naming it as such.

Through the celebration of Engineers Week each year, the Calusa Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society is dedicated to developing and sustaining a dynamic engineering profession by ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce and by raising the public’s understanding and appreciation of engineering contributions to society; and
Whereas: This Board wishes to recognize and honor all engineers who live and work in Lee County and who practice the profession of engineering in an honorable, responsible, and competent manner and those students who have chosen to be educated in the field of engineering. NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida does hereby extend greetings and best wishes to all observing Engineers Week, February 14-20, 2010.

2-2-10 Wayne Daltry
In February 2002, Wayne was tapped to head the county’s newly created Smart Growth Department and shepherd the citizen Smart Growth Advisory Committee through a process to make recommendations that help balance quality of life, the economy and our environment heading into the future. The rest is history; and WHEREAS: Wayne, with good humor and great insight, has served Southwest Florida and its citizens past, present and future; and WHEREAS: Wayne won’t exactly be retiring as he will continue to be a driving force in sound planning and growth management and make important contributions to his community through the many groups and organizations to which he belongs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of County Commissioners of Lee County, Florida and the Lee County Smart Growth Advisory Committee hereby conveys our grateful appreciation to Wayne Daltry for his hard work, outstanding service and contributions to Lee County and thanks Wayne for his commitment to the livability of our community.
