DEP Permit Required for Compost Production 


  • Piles must be 55°C (131°F) for 15 days and turned at a minimum 5 times during that period.

  • Actual Experience: Piles heat up in 3 to 5 days and must be turned daily (sometimes twice a day) to keep from burning out (overheating the bugs) and to keep O2 levels up.

  • Monthly testing for Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), metals. Demonstration of pathogen/vector attraction reduction.

  • Tracking of inbound quantities, source, and outbound for “distribution and marketing.”

  • Requires Class A Wastewater Operator on site (8 hrs./day) during operation.

  • Permitted capacity 29,000 wet tons of sludge per year.
