Yacht Club Colony Distribution Line Neighborhood Meeting

There will be a neighborhood meeting to discuss the distribution line improvements within Yacht Club Colony. This meeting will discuss the permanent transmission line, needed improvements and payment plans. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 6:00 pm at the Knights of Columbus, 16351 Slater Road, North Fort Myers.

• LCU and the YCC Water Committee met on April 11th to discuss grant/financial opportuties, alternative payment plans, recommended improvements and the payment plans. The preliminary engineering was completed by David Douglas Associates, Inc. and a copy of the report can be obtained by clicking here.
• LCU and YCC Water Committee met to discuss several options for distribution improvement project and alternative financing.  Click here for a written response that includes input from several County Departments and outside agencies.  We will continue to share information and LCU has hired David Douglas Associates, Inc. to perform a preliminary engineering study of the project to evaluate options to reduce the cost of the project.  

Community Budget Issue Request (CBIR)  

Lee County Utilities explored grant opportunities that the community has inquired about. One of those grant programs suggested by YCC was the Community Budget Issue Request (CBIR). Lee County staff contacted Geof Mansfield from FDEP in Tallahassee who is in charge of the CBIR funding. He explained to Lee County staff that FDEPs involvement is to administer the funds, but the funds have to be approved from the State Legislature. Lee County staff contacted Senator Benacquisto’s office and were told that funds through this program have not be appropriated for the last couple of years. The Senator’s staff felt that funds would not be appropriated again during this legislative session.

Other thoughts that need to be considered for this type of funding (if it were available) is appropriated under Florida Statute 403.885 and has to meet the following criteria:

Eligible recipients of such grants include counties, municipalities, water management districts, and special districts that have legal responsibilities for water quality improvement, water management, stormwater management, wastewater management, lake and river water restoration projects, and drinking water projects pursuant to this section. That also:

·         Protect public health OR the environment; AND

Implement a state, local or regional plan related to water quality improvement and restoration.
