Lehigh Acres

The Lehigh Acres Community Plan establishes a vision for the community’s future.  Adopted in March 2009 by Lee County Commissioners, the plan sets forth a planning framework for achieving the vision through the development of community-wide design features and targeted mixed-use centers.

In March 2010, Lee County adopted Lee Plan Goal 32 to guide implementation of the plan’s framework.  In June 2010, the Lee County Department of Community Development’s Planning and Zoning Divisions began a two-year community planning effort to update the County’s Land Development Code to specify how developers, builders and property owners can develop in Lehigh Acres.

This two-year effort has two phases – general code standards and mixed-use center standards.  The first phase of the LDC effort are general codes which address standards for community review, commercial design and signage, street numbers, landscaping/buffer requirements, food vending, model homes, and duplex design.  The 2nd phase of the LDC effort are form-base codes which address design and form of the community’s mixed-use centers.

Leading this effort is a group of 35 community members who meet bi-monthly at the East County Regional Public Library to discuss how they want their community to be developed.  The results of their input are incorporated into the LDC standards for Lehigh Acres.

The 1st phase is nearing completion. The 2nd phase was kicked off July 9 with a public meeting, followed by another meeting on Aug. 13.
