  • Communicable Disease Control, Prevention and Surveillance
The Communicable Disease Control, Prevention and Surveillance Nursing Department is responsible for receiving, investigating and reporting communicable diseases and disease outbreaks. In some cases this would also include providing prophylactic treatment for exposed individuals, or excluding workers from sensitive work situations until they are no longer communicable. The Department also works closely with the Division of Children and Families Day Care Licensing, Lee County Animal Control, Lee County Mosquito Control, the State of Florida District Food and Waterborne Disease Epidemiologist, and neighboring County Health Departments. This department also works very closely with other Lee County Health Department divisions including Environmental Health, Environmental Engineering and Immunization Services.

How do we do it?

  • Patients are usually contacted by telephone.
  • Some patients are visited at home or in the hospital.
  • All information is confidential.
  • Interventions are based on knowledge of the way the disease is spread.
  • For some diseases, patients may not be permitted to return to work, school, or day care until the disease is no longer able to be spread.
  • In some situations, the Health Department provides follow-up testing at no charge.
  • Epidemiology also provides inspections of body piercing salons
