we get, but we make a life

by what we give."

SENIOR FRIENDSHIP CENTER

The Senior Friendship Center is a true example of elders helping elders, with medical care provided to senior citizens by retired physicians and nurses. Licensing is accomplished with what are called "limited licenses" by the Florida Board of Medicine. There is no fee for these licenses when the professional intends to practice as a volunteer. In addition, the state assumes the liability risk for those who volunteer at the Senior Friendship Center.

Clients of the Senior Friendship Center are fifty-five and older; many would have been in difficult circumstances without SFC as they are too young for Medicare and unable to purchase private insurance.

In addition to the good feelings that come from volunteering, this program gives retired medical professionals an environment where they can continue to interact with other doctors and nurses, receive continuing education, and put to good use those hard-learned, valuable skills.

If you are interested in volunteering at the Senior Friendship Center, or would like more information about it, please contact Nancy Perez at (239) 656-2541. Their current most needed specialties are ophthalmologists and podiatrists. All health care professionals, however, are extremely welcome.
