FAQ about KIDS READ DOWN FINES

What is the Kids Read Down Fines program?
Kids Read Down Fines is a program which allows kids the opportunity to decrease their library card overdue charges by reading for Library Bucks. Kids will check in with staff at the start of the program and for every 15 minutes of reading, they will receive a coupon worth up to $2 in Library Bucks to be used toward existing overdue charges, with the potential of earning $8 in one hour. (If the library card of the child/teen has overdue charges of less than $2, only the existing overdue charges will be removed. There is no cash value for any unused portion of the $2  Library Bucks coupon and any leftover amount cannot be applied to future overdue charges.)

Are adults eligible to earn Library Bucks?
No. This program is only for children and teens through senior high school.

Do I have to be in the library to read down my fines?
Yes. Patrons can only earn Library Bucks when reading in the library’s designated area at the designated time.

Where can I read down my fines?
The program will be offered at library locations throughout the county.  Check with your local library for dates and times. Click here for the current schedule.

Am I only able to participate at my local library?
No, you can read down your overdue charges at any participating location of the Lee County Library System.  You may attend the program at multiple locations to decrease your overdue charges even more.

Do I have to read anything in particular?
Feel free to read books, magazines, comics, newspapers or any other print material you would like!  Be sure to bring your reading materials along with you when you come to the program.

How do I redeem my Library Bucks?
Bring your Library Bucks to the check-out desk and staff will remove the appropriate amount of overdue charges from your library card. Coupons are not transferable and cannot be applied to future overdue charges.

Can I pay for lost or damaged books with my library bucks?
No, only fines associated with overdue materials are eligible

Can I use my library bucks to replace my lost library card?
If you’d like to use your Library Bucks toward the cost of replacing your library card, you may do so only once a year.  The rest of your coupon will go toward overdue charges on your library card account.

Do I have to use my Library Bucks the day of the program?
We recommend using your Library Bucks as soon as you finish reading to prevent losing the coupon.  An expiration date is specified on the coupon and it must be used by that time.  Library Bucks cannot be replaced if they are lost or misplaced.

As caregiver, can I read to my pre-reader?
Of course, you may!  We would love to see parents and caregivers read to their young children to help them earn coupons.  However, Library Bucks will only be issued for the child’s card, not for the adult’s card.
