Types of Storytime
Storytime is a library program of picture book sharing,
rhyming, singing, finger playing, storytelling, and/or other related activities.
Storytime helps children increase listening and group cooperative skills while they hear
wonderful stories for their age group.
Because children of different ages are at different levels
of development, there are several storytime options. Not all options are offered at all
branches. Group size is limited for most storytimes. Pre-registration is required.

Preschool (Ages 3, 4, &
5)
Preschoolers attend storytime independently while parents
or caregivers wait nearby in the library building. This storytime includes activities
planned for larger groups, requiring more participation, a longer attention span, and more
self-sufficiency. Each Preschool Storytime lasts about 30 minutes.
Toddler (Age 2 with adult)
During Toddler Storytime, each child is accompanied by an
adult, who participates with the child in all activities. The success of a
storytime for
this age group depends on adult encouragement. Plan to make this a special one-on-one
interaction with your child. Each Toddler Storytime lasts about 20 minutes.

Sibling (Age 2 with adult;
siblings)
A variation of Toddler Storytime, this adult/child
interaction program is for 2-year-olds who need to attend with one or two brothers or
sisters. Each Sibling Storytime lasts about 20 minutes. (Currently held only at the Cape Coral-Lee County Public Library.)
Family (children and adults)
This program, for young children and adults, lasts about 30
minutes and is best for those who are at least 2 years old.

Before Storytime Tips For Parents and
Caregivers
- Discuss storytime with your child before you come,
explaining that there will be stories, books, fingerplays, puppets, songs, and other
children.
- Before the first day of storytime, visit the library and
meet the library staff.
- Allow for bathroom time before
storytime.
- Come early! Young children are easily distracted, and
latecomers disrupt activities.
- Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early.
- During Preschool Storytime, please stay nearby in the
library building.
- Do not leave the library.

After Storytime Tips
- Allow time to talk and play with
storytime friends after the
session.
- Check out books to share with your child at home.
- Ask for help in finding books of special interest to your
child.
- Share storytime experiences at home by repeating
storytime
songs, fingerplays, and rhymes.
- Listen responsively if your child initiates a conversation
about a storytime experience.
- Ask questions using the words WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, to
help your child explore and remember what happened in storytime.

Thank you for your interest in helping your child discover
books and the love of reading!
visits since 10/19/99.
