Frequently
Asked Questions about using the Internet access terminals in the library Most questions about reserving a computer and printing costs are answered in our Public PC Solution brochure (PDF). Answers to additional questions about using the Internet are listed below. 1. Is the World Wide Web (WWW) the same as the Internet? No, the WWW is a subset of the Internet. It is one way of accessing the Internet, like Telnet. The WWW allows users to post and download graphic images as well as text. 2. Will I be able to use my own software on a public Internet access terminal? Personal software or hardware may not be installed or used on library equipment because of the potential for viruses. 3. Will I be able to have an e-mail account? LCLS is offering Internet access for
educational and research purposes. The library will not provide individual e-mail
accounts. However, you may access some of the free web-based e-mail services such as
Hot-Bot or Yahoo. 4. Is information off of the Internet subject to copyright law? From the moment a document is created it is presumed to hold a copyright. Materials on the Internet are generally protected by copyright laws just like print sources. For some online information on copyright and fair use see: http://fairuse.stanford.edu/library/faq.html 5. How do I cite information I get off of the Internet? Electronic Styles: A Handbook for Citing Electronic Information (Ref. 808.027 Li) by Li and Crane is now in its second edition. It is available in the reference collections of the regional libraries: Ft. Myers, Cape Coral, and South County. This is presently the most comprehensive guide for citing any type of information that is accessed in electronic format, whether online or CD-ROM. The Columbia Guide to Online Style by Janice R. Walker (Ref. 808.027 Wal) is available at all LCLS locations. The lastest editions of the major style manuals (MLA, APA, Chicago Manual) include some broad guidelines on citing online sources, but do not explore the subject in great detail.6. Who do I contact if I have a complaint, concern, or suggestion concerning LCLS Internet policies or procedures? If you have a complaint or concern about LCLS Internet policies and procedures, you may contact the branch manager or librarian-in-charge. You may also contact : Library Administration
