How to Get Involved: Plan Your Own Activity

Any business, social or professional organization, group of family, friends or neighbors can easily get involved. Develop an activity that ties in to the themes of "The Kite Runner" and schedule it for sometime between September and October, 2006. Share your ideas with the project coordinator at Lee County Library System, 239-461-2914, so it becomes an official “One Book, One Community: Lee County Reads” event.

Here’s a list of suggested activities to help you get the ball rolling:
  • Form a lunchtime book discussion group at your place of employment

  • Watch and discuss the related film, "Kandahar", in your neighborhood community room

  • Your business offers a discount to people presenting a One Book, One Community: Lee County Reads "The Kite Runner" bookmark

  • Teachers give extra credit to students who attend a One Book activity

  • Have your book club put "The Kite Runner" on their agenda

  • School drama departments plan theatrical readings or productions

  • Have your civic, social or professional organization hold a program on:

    • The roles of women in the book

    • Traditional Afghan recipes – cooking demo
