Powell Creek
The Powell Creek Watershed is located north of the Caloosahatchee. This watershed covers an area of approximately eleven square miles, two of which are located in Charlotte County. The northern boundary of the watershed is near the south line of the Webb Wildlife Management Area, the east boundary is along the Marsh Point and Daughtrey Creek watersheds, the south boundary is the Caloosahatchee and the west boundary is along the Gator Slough, Hancock Creek and Yellow Fever Creek - East Branch watersheds.
This watershed originates at its confluence with the Caloosahatchee and runs in a generally northern direction into Charlotte County. The Powell Creek Watershed is relatively narrow, varying from one to two miles across. The common boundary with Gator Slough allows cross-boundary flow when there is sheet flow from the northern portions of these watersheds in higher storm events. During large storm events the watershed boundary along Laurel Drive and northeast of Suncoast Estates has always been somewhat nebulous.
This watershed was studied in the 1979 "Water Management in Lee County" report by Johnson Engineering. The boundary established in that report sustained the boundary determined in Smally, Wellford & Nalven's 1961 report on Lee County watersheds. The current boundary is essentially similar to the 1979 report boundary. The USDA Soil Conservation Service also confirmed the general boundary in their 1984 report entitled "Flood Plain Management Study - Lee County, Florida". The current boundary will be perpetuated through the Lee County Surface Water Management Master Plan (LCSWMMP) effort. The boundary information was verified through a combination of Johnson Engineering field reconnaissance, USGA quad sheets, Lee County one foot contour maps and Johnson Engineering in-house data, both historical and current.
The Powell Creek Watershed boundary map is located on page 17-W3. It delineates the overall land boundary with adjacent watersheds identified. The portion of the watershed in Charlotte County is shown on the map in Section 1 of Volume III. Data for structures along the channel and stationing along the channel are shown on the map on page 17-WM. The stationing relates to the flood profile as well as the structure locations. The structural facilities are shown in the relative area of their actual location. Limitations of scale do not permit structures to be shown at their exact locations on the ground. This map is intended for general information only. Lengths and widths of structures should not be determined by scaling the symbols shown. The sizes are provided in the tabular data on the map.
