Telegraph Creek
The Telegraph Creek Watershed is located in the northeast area of Lee County. It is approximately 88 square miles in size with six square miles in Lee County and the remaining 82 square miles in Charlotte County. This is the largest watershed discharging into the Caloosahatchee in Lee County. The watershed trunk originates at the Caloosahatchee approximately 3.5 miles east of SR 31. The Lee County portion of the Telegraph Creek Watershed is approximately one mile wide at the downstream end and three miles wide at the Lee-Charlotte County line. The majority of this watershed lies within the Babcock Ranch.
The watershed boundary has not changed significantly since the 1979 "Water Management in Lee County" report by Johnson Engineering. Although not substantial, the boundary has been revised somewhat from the "Lee County Interim Surface Water Management Plan."
Johnson Engineering utilized a number of verification methods including on-the-ground reconnaissance to generally confirm the watershed boundary presented in this report. There are no significant structural flow crossings along the watershed boundary within Lee County. The Telegraph Creek main trunk remains a natural channel which has seen little modification. Big Island Canal is a major tributary to Telegraph Creek.
A general description of the Telegraph Creek Watershed boundary within Lee County is as follows: beginning 600 feet east of the northwest corner of Section 2, Township 43 South, Range 26 East continue east along the Lee-Charlotte County line to a point approximately 500 feet east of the northeast corner of Section 6, Township 43 South, Range 27 East; then generally south and southwest by contour to CR 78 to a point approximately 2,300 feet east of Telegraph Creek Lane; then proceed west along CR 78 to a point approximately 1,300 feet east of the channel; then generally southwest by contour to the north bank of the Caloosahatchee; then west along the north bank of the Caloosahatchee; then generally north by contour to CR 78 at a point approximately 1,800 feet west of the channel; then west along CR 78 for 400 feet; then generally north, northeast and north by contour to the Lee-Charlotte County line.
