 Billy Creek

The Billy Creek Watershed (BCW) is located in the north central area of Lee County, south of the Caloosahatchee. This watershed covers an area of approximately thirteen square miles. The north boundary of the watershed is Palm Beach Boulevard, the east boundary is along I-75, then by contour to SR 82 the south boundary is SR 82 and Hanson Street and the west boundary mostly approximates the old SCL (now the Seminole Gulf Railroad) railroad grade. The large majority of the south and west boundaries are within the City of Fort Myers. The total watershed consists of thirteen square miles, of which six square miles are located within the City of Fort Myers and the remaining seven square miles are in unincorporated Lee County.

The BCW conveyance originates at its confluence with the Caloosahatchee River in Section 18, Township 44 South, Range 25 East. There are several tributary channels that outfall into Billy Creek including Ford Street Canal, as well as the Palmetto and Zapato channels. The Billy Creek Watershed is surrounded by the Orange River Watershed to the east, the Six Mile Cypress and the upper reaches of the Ten Mile Canal watersheds to the south, and the City of Fort Myers to the west. There are some flow interconnections across the watershed boundary. These are further discussed in Section 6 of this volume.

Growth has continued in this watershed and boundary changes have occurred, especially on the east side. Recent data, for the most part, substantiates the boundary established in 1961 by Smally, Wellford & Nalven's study of watersheds in Lee County. The exceptions are 1) a portion of the watershed east of I-75 has been shifted into the Orange River Watershed and 2) the area north of Palm Beach Boulevard which had been included in some previous studies. This area does convey water directly to the Caloosahatchee without use of Billy Creek. Interconnects exist along the creek at Alameda Canal and the FP&L right-of-way ditch which allow flow outside of the watershed in higher storm events. The boundary presented in this report will be perpetuated through the Lee County Surface Water Management Master Plan (LCSWMMP) effort. The current boundary information was verified through a combination of actual field reconnaissance, U.S.G.S. quad sheets, Lee County one foot contour maps and Johnson Engineering in-house data, both historical and current.

The Billy Creek watershed boundary map is located on page 41-W3. It delineates the overall land boundary and identifies adjacent watersheds. Structural data is shown on page 41-WM in this volume. The stationing shown on page 41-WM relates to the flood profile as well as the structures. The structural facilities are shown in the relative area of their actual location. Limitations of scale do not permit structures to be shown at their exact locations on the ground. This map is intended for general information only. Lengths and widths of structures should not be determined by scaling the symbols shown.
