Whiskey Creek
The Whiskey Creek Watershed (WCW) is located in the south central area of Lee County. This watershed covers an area of approximately nine square miles. The northern boundary of the watershed is generally Colonial Boulevard, the east boundary is along Ten Mile Canal, the south boundary is approximately Cypress Lake Drive and the west boundary is McGregor Boulevard.
Whiskey Creek originates southeast of its Caloosahatchee River outfall. There is one major tributary (Iona Drainage District Canal "L") and some smaller canals that outfall into the creek. Whiskey Creek becomes IDD Canal "H" shortly before it crosses to the south side of College Parkway. Adjacent watersheds are Winkler Canal in the City of Fort Myers to the north, the Ten Mile Canal watershed to the east with Deep Lagoon and Hendry Creek watersheds to the south. The area west of the WCW is coastal and drains directly to the Caloosahatchee.
The boundary established in the 1979 Johnson Engineering, Inc. (JEI) report sustained the boundary determined by Smally, Wellford & Nalven's 1961 report on Lee County watersheds. The current boundary differs slightly in the very northernmost area from the 1979 report boundary. A portion of the area shown draining into the WCW now discharges into the City of Fort Myers Winkler Canal. This area is less than one half section. Other than this change, the current boundary is essentially similar to the 1979 report boundary. Portions of the current boundary are also described in the 1988 "Canal "L" Watershed Water Management Study" prepared for Lee County by JEI. The current boundary will be perpetuated through implementation of the Lee County Surface Water Management Master Plan (LCSWMMP) effort. The boundary information was verified through a combination of actual JEI field reconnaissance, USGS quad-sheets, Lee County one foot contour maps and JEI in-house data, both historical and current.
The WCW watershed boundary map is located on page 42-W3. A watershed map on page 42-WM also delineates the boundary as well as data for structures along the channel. The stationing shown on the map relates the flood profile to the location of the structures. The structural facilities are shown in the relative area of their actual location. Limitations of scale do not permit structures to be shown at their exact locations on the ground. This map is intended for general information only. Lengths and widths of structures should not be determined by scaling the symbols shown.
Interconnections exist at the north and south ends of the watershed. At the north, there are two connections to Winkler Canal. One connection is the canal/culvert through the Edison Mall property. The second is the parallel roadway swale on the east side of Evans Avenue. Canal "H" crosses Cypress Lake Drive at the south end of the watershed and interconnects WCW with the Hendry Creek system. The interconnections have existed for many years and should be maintained. Without the aid of control structures, the system directs flow where the greatest capacity exists for any particular set of rainfall and runoff conditions.
